Miu Miu shows their commitment to femininity by sharing women’s stories through fashion and art at the Tales and Tellers Exhibition.

On October 16th, 2024, Miu Miu took over the exhibition of design and opened up their Tales and Tellers art exhibit at the Palais d’ Lena in Paris. The brand wants to show its commitment to exploring femininity through film footage, video installations, and live performances.

Miu Miu is known as a sister brand to Prada and less commonly known as an experimental line created by popular designer Miuccia Prada. Miu Miu as a brand has been promoting and supporting art/artists since 2011 with their first version of Tales and Tellers. The brand commissioned local artists and directors to curate films exploring unique experiences of womanhood and the different facets of femininity. The 2011 films laid the groundwork for the collaboration with the Palais d’ Lena in Paris that will be running until October 20th, 2024.

The exhibition was directed and curated by popular Polish artist Goshka Macuga who has a history working with Miu Miu and Prada. The exhibit includes films, live performances re-enactments, and video installations that immerse the observer into the stories, almost like a simulation. Tales and Tellers also includes an itinerary for panels of talks and conversations that will be exploring different experiences of femininity of anyone who identifies with a feminized body. Not only is this art exhibit a captivating experience, but the conversations being held also allow for real and open discussions.

Most importantly, these women’s stories through film, live performances, and conversation touch on important topics such as superficiality. One of the live performances titled “The Truthless Times” connects to the idea of superficiality through the truth being considered radical and that the news is enforcing mental gymnastics onto society. This is just one of the many unique views and experiences shared through the exhibit. Miu Miu wanted to give a large platform to different women from all over the world to share the antithesis of the female experience.

This collection celebrates the Americana style of the “Art school kid” you always saw in class with that cool grunge and distressed style. The collection features denim jackets with fringing details, cowboy prints, and western-inspired embellishments while incorporating their modern and creative twist on it with the slimmer silhouettes and straight leg trousers. The show also references icons like Kurt Cobain who is remembered through his grunge style of music and clothing for incorporating patchwork, denim, knits, and flannel. As Andersson Bell states on their Instagram, this collection “is inspired by the rebellious spirit of the art school scene.” This grungy runway includes motifs from the 90s and early 2000s while still revealing itself to be sleek and casual for creative yet trendy fashion wearers.

The brand decided to debut this collection in Shanghai for more exposure as they are only available in stock at top Chinese Multi-brand stores. Andersson Bell is hoping to expand to E-Commerce and eventually into their own store as they are growing in popularity across China. The Creative Director, Dohun Kim states that they chose Shanghai for this show because “We wanted to connect to buyers, press, and fans here. It’s a large market for us, and sales have been strong.” So gear up with your creative side and embrace Western Americana style because Andersson Bell is making a breakthrough with this collection by not only connecting to their Chinese market but also referencing all the people who were or knew the “Art School Kid.”

This runway is beautifully rebellious as it embraces the creativity and grunge style of the 90s while incorporating modern silhouettes and classic western style motifs like cowboy hats and buckled shoes. The collections use of blending and styling different textures together with different knits, denims, and polyester is useful for the trendy fashion buyer as they can use this collection to pull a lot of different styles from one look. The runway ties in the theme perfectly with the soft water-color like flooring and background to immerse the clothing within a popular art medium.
